The idea mill
Is constantly churning. I am guilty of getting a snippet of a story and writing myself a note in my cell phone so I don’t forget it. I am equally culpable to forgetting stories for not writing them down, or a scene or whatever. I could kick myself when that happens. I generally get an idea a day. Not all pan out to a viable story. In fact many are for the same book. In fact, I wrote two new paragraphs and saved it for future reference. It is a book I’m fighting to write. I didn’t want this idea. Oh bother, it wouldn’t leave me alone. So, I purged myself of the idea, plotted a little and put it away.
Some would wonder if this detracts from my other works in progress. I think not. In fact, I think it keeps one’s creativity fresh. Also, it is beneficial to me, at least, to navigate away from the current page to work on something else, if only to refresh when I return to it. For example, last night I wrote on wip #2 that I haven’t work on in two weeks. I re-read it to familiarize myself with what I’d done so far, and then the most amazing thing happened. I smiled. If a work you created can make you smile when you return to it, that’s great. To me, that means I haven’t lost the spark or passion for writing. And passion it is… It also invigorates me to keep writing that story.
If you come to a stall on any one of your works, don’t fret. Do some small short bursts of creativity on other projects. It doesn’t have to be writing even. But something different to keep the love alive…the love for writing.
I certainly have a love for it.
