Story Theme Music
Early rambling thoughts.
Think of movies. Most have a distinct song associated with them. Many of these songs or musical scores become hits or sell a gazillion copies of the music in some format or other. People play that CD or MP3, etc. again and again to evoke pleasant memories of the movie or the gorgeous actor or… You get the idea. It is the running note that holds the story together. Again and again, you hear that sound, and you know something special is going to happen. If it’s a series, the music swells into the theater, and you sit up, set down your popcorn, and focus on the screen. The director has caught your attention.
Books don’t have music. Actually, it would be a cute gimmick if they did, rather like those musical greeting cards. Imagine the marketing potential of every HQN book having the same music play every time someone opened the cover. OK, this would be bad for reading in public, but think that you can disable it. But not until it’s been purchased. You’re on the other side of the bookstore and those dulcet tones play so softly hearing them is nearly subliminal. “Hey, I should go look at the romance section,” you think, and rush right over, abandoning those heavy literary tomes you think you should read because… You don’t remember.
