Ahh…First Kisses
Deep sigh…first kisses… They always give us that “ahh” sensation when we read about them in books, when we see them in movies, and when we write about them. That perfect kiss where the hero and heroine finally let their lips join, their emotions swirl, the world disappears, and there is nothing left but the the two of them, their bodies tingling, their minds all consumed with each other.
As a writer when you write about the first kiss it is a major turning point in the story, this is it! The hero and heroine are beginning to fall in love with each other. You have to make it absolutely perfect. Depending on the plot of your story and who your characters are, you want the kiss to be sweet and sensual, or you want it to be rough, demanding. Who inciates the first kiss? If it’s the hero, is the heroine a little stiff at first or does she fall right into his arms?
But how do you write that? How do you get all of the feelings, sensations, thoughts across to the reader?
Obviously it depends on the situation and all of the above questions, but it isn’t just a quick thing to type in forty seconds, it is something that takes a lot of thought and concentration. It takes a great deal of word play, to make sure that it comes across exactly the way you see it. You have to use all of the senses so your reader feels like they are there, they know exactly how the h/h are feeling.
In one of my WIP’s, my hero and heroine have been fighting ferociously. As they stare each other down, their eyes connected, passion brewing deep within, he grabs her roughly, pulls her against him, and slams his mouth to hers. His kiss is angry at first and she fights him, but then with a simple twist of emotions, their kiss deepens, becomes more than anger, it is about desire, sensuality, and the fact that they love each other.
In another one of my manuscripts, the kiss is much more sweet and seductive. The hero says something utterly romantic to her, their eyes meet, the worlds spin and you can feel with them as their lips slowly come together. A gentle kiss, just lips brushing against one another, but so sensual are the feelings passing between them that it is completely satisfying.
My very first kiss was awful… I think I was 15 and it’s a memory I would soon forget. (*chuckle*) But since that first sloppy, teeth crunching experience, I’d like to say that I’ve had some “ahh” moments of my own, your knees get weak, you sigh into the kiss, practically melt…
How do you write kisses? Readers what do you look for in a kiss?
For those of you daring enough…what was your first kiss like? Have you had the “ahh” moment?
Happy Wednesday everybody!

PS. Check out the auction!!!! Just a few hours left!!!

It was my 13th birthday and I had boys and girls over for a party. We played spin the bottle, and I got Garry. His lips were quite large and when they moved on mine, my stomach flip flopped and my palms ached….it was wonderful. Years later we dated and our second kiss was nothing like the first…sigh! We got married and later divorced :C) Shayne
January 30th, 2008 at 8:42 amLove the illustrations! My first French kiss was in sixth grade. Michael Cummings, the cute bad boy of the class. He kissed me six times (I kept count). I was absolutely shocked, but I guess I got used to them. *g* The NERWA sponsors a “First Kiss” contest every year, something to keep in mind when you’re writing yours!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:47 amMy first kiss was awful. Not sloppy and teeth crunching, but dry as a bone. Ugh. Never kissed that guy again. After that, kisses became much better.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:57 amFirst kiss scenes are among my favorite things to write in stories. I love that building of sexual tension to a fever pitch.
Excellent sharing! Yeah, I never kissed my first guy again either
He tried, but I always turned away…
Writing them is a lot of fun, I’ll look into that contest!
Thanks for sharing!!

First kiss BAD. Way bad. Let’s never revisit it BAD.
But I’ve had some knee-weaking kisses. Finally. After a lot of frogs.
January 30th, 2008 at 6:21 pmI love writing the first kiss in a manuscript. I also love reading them - especially if you’ve been kept waiting!
My own first kiss that I consider to be truly it was an aaaah moment for sure. It was the cute boy in class that I’d had a crush on for months, so I was over the moon when he kissed me
January 31st, 2008 at 3:21 amI’ll stick to the first kiss with hubby. We were at a Christmas party for my job. We’d only just started seeing each other, and the organizers of the party knew this. And I was only 17. They had a game where the men got in a line, and the women, blindfolded one at a time, would have to feel the men’s face with their hands and guess which guy was theirs. They wouldn’t let you kiss the wrong guy, but I didn’t know that. They exploited my age and told me to only kiss on the cheek. After several more weeks of chaste kisses, I grew impatient for his luscious lips. So one day when he dropped me off and he puckered up for a peck, I said, “NO!” and grabbed his face with both hands and kept my lips on him. It was, meh. He had never kissed anyone and was startled still. But with some practice his kisses, and the thought of them, still make me melt. *le sigh*
