Finding my Niche and Share a Guilty Pleasure
Finding my Niche
Thanks so much for inviting me to blog at Romantic Inks today, Haven!
I’m often asked the question, “How did you get into writing romantic spanking stories?” And while the answer, “I kind of just stumbled onto it,” seems cliché, it really is the truth. I was browsing the Internet several years ago, looking for romantic spanking stories to read for fun, when I came across a site called Bethany’s Woodshed, which sold romantic spanking stories. Interested, I clicked on one and was intrigued by what I read. You see, I’ve always loved the historical romances that had a spanking scene between the hero and heroine in them, but I had no idea there was an entire website out there that published romances with spanking as the main theme! I immediately thought to myself, I could write those!
I had already been working on a romance storyline about a feisty journalist who keeps crossing paths with a police detective who can’t stand reporters, and I had no doubt that I could create a lot of spanking situations with these two characters. So, after checking Bethany’s submission guidelines, I immediately set to work on my first romantic spanking story, Samantha and the Detective. After I had finished the book, I submitted it to Bethany’s for review, and then waited anxiously to hear from them. And yes, the waiting was nerve-wracking!
But several weeks later, I was absolutely thrilled when I received an email from Bethany’s several weeks later, saying Samantha and the Detective had been accepted for publication! I was so excited that I called my hubby at work to tell him the good news right away!
That was three years ago, and since then I have written over twenty books for Bethany’s Woodshed, as well as it’s sister-site, Romantic Spankings. I prefer to write contemporary romances, but I’ve also written historicals, westerns, sci-fi, and even time-travel. I’ve even added two other pen names, Samantha Danvers and Madison Kincaide, just to keep things interesting.
Even though I’ve had a lot of books published with Bethany, I still never lose that thrill of seeing a new one come out, and I’m pretty sure I never will!

Happy Friday, everybody! Thank you so much for stopping in to make my couple days here so great. I hope your week’s been tolerable, and your weekend plans are fun-filled! My weekend plans are revisions-filled, but in between the revisions and my not-so-9-5 job, I intend to do some serious shopping…or maybe some serious writing.
Ok, maybe not too serious. Right, not serious at all.
Recently, a member of Romance Divas posted about sharing ideas for promotion, craft, art, and everything in between, with sister (and brother) writers, and I remembered this great web site that not only provides me with endless giggling entertainment, but also provides me with ideas.
This is how we play.
Step 2: Giggle a little (or maybe a lot).
Step 3: Copy/paste your favorite, and name your characters.
Step 4: Share one of your favorite entertainment links!
Step 5: Kick back and watch for the announcement of the lucky word-lover who will win that $10 gift certificate to Freya’s Bower!
Here’s mine:
Dirk Timberly is a scarfaced guerilla librarian on the hunt for the last specimen of a great and near-mythical creature. Beatrice “BeeBop” Cavendish is a cynical punk college professor from aristocratic European stock. They fight crime!

He’s a genetically engineered guitar-strumming ex-con who must take medication to keep him sane. She’s an orphaned hypochondriac detective from aristocratic European stock. They fight crime!
HAHAHAHAHAHA. His name is Swade Rivers, and her name is Jessica Dwindledale. They Fight Crime!
HAHAHAHA.

One can really pass the time with this site:

Paige.. your website… and Smantha and the Detective are so intriguing and I am very curious to read one of your novels, and I am totally going to start with Samantha and the Detective. What are your Sci Fi novels like? Are they romances as well? I love Sci Fi stuff.
March 30th, 2007 at 6:53 amHi, Laura! I’m so glad you find my stories intriguing enough to buy them! I think you’ll love Samantha and the Detective! It’s a fun story! And yes, my sci-fi stories are romances, too!
The Ambassador’s Daughter is about Inarii Kal’yle, the spoiled, impetuous daughter of an interplanetary ambassador, who finally meets her match in the form of her new, no-nonsense bodyguard, the handsome Rand Barany. An expert in the field of personal protection, Rand has a reputation for getting the job done, and has no patience for his charge’s blatant disregard for the rules.
Valuable Cargo takes place in the year 2850. Captain Tanna Aldrick and her all female salvage crew have discovered a ship drifting in deep space. Inside is a man that has been in hypersleep for over seven-hundred years. And not just any man, but a six-foot-four blond-haired hunk! And when they say that “they just don’t make ‘em like they used to,” it’s certainly an understatement when it comes to Garrick Carlisle.
I also have another sci-fi story called Not the Man She Thought, which is coming soon!
I’d love to hear how you like them. Laura, so please feel free to email me!

Emily: “He’s an obese photographer on his last day in the job. She’s a ditzy foul-mouthed schoolgirl living on borrowed time. They fight crime!”
I keep picturing Newman from Seinfeld and a Japanese schoolgirl? Too weird.
I like good old YouTube.com for wasting time. Mainly the “hubba hubba” shirtless video of Gerard Butler
(There is one called “Fingers” which is pretty good, too)
Paige: I had never heard of spanking romance before. Now I am sooo curious. Hmmm…I’ve got to check out your site.

Paige, I never heard of spanking romance either. I remember a scene with it in a Johanna Lindsey book once though. Going to have to find out more about this now
March 30th, 2007 at 2:25 pmLaura, that’d be great! Hope you enjoy them!
Emily, it’s funny you should mention Johanna Lindsey because she was one of the authors that got me into the genre! Kat Martin, too! After you check out my website, let me know what you think!
