Taking on the Spot
No… not that spot.
Where do you write? In a coffee shop? In a quiet library? On your bed? What’s your writing spot… the place that inspires you and gives you the most pleasure out of creating stories?
Writing outside is fabulous. Especially in the Spring. However, with the winter months dragging on, dreaming of spring seems to be more productive than actually writing. That warm breeze. The subtle smell of new blooms. The hot sun to remind all with cabin fever that it’s really over. That white stuff is gone for good. (At least until next winter.)
The sun shines harder and it is forgotten that the snow will ever come back.
Spring gardens offer so much for writing. Often quiet, often filled with people-children, romantic couples, musicians, artists, and the occasional wedding. The romance in each flower fills the creative emptiness brought on by the chill of the winter months.
Bring on the sun! Bring on the warm ideas! Let the new ideas bloom to life!
A garden somewhere is waiting for the cold to leave, the snow to melt, its leaves to bud and bloom. Perhaps it is even waiting for the people to run and laugh, play and create, and to smell the first flowers it offers in welcome.
Writers who love the outdoors wait longingly for that shaded bench- that soft patch of grass-the flowering tree with petals to rain on paper. The frozen ideas will warm and come to life.

What a beautiful post! And just what I needed on our cold, gray day today. I really love sitting outside, too. Alas, here it’s only that warm for 2 months or so (because I’m a freezy-cat). I can’t wait, though! Poolside writing! Yippee!
February 20th, 2007 at 10:42 amLacey, what a beautiful scene. I can see myself all cuddled up on that bench with my laptop, the air filled with the scent of lilacs. It would be so much nicer than my disaster of an office where printed bits of chapters disappear in piles of unrelated papers. [[[sigh]]]
February 20th, 2007 at 11:37 amLaura ~ What a lovely blog! I might try writing outdoors one of these days. Although, my version of writing “outdoors” is letting sunshine in the house, LOL.
February 20th, 2007 at 12:25 pmPS: I’m emailing you off-loop.
I usually write at my desk, but my office is full of windows that look out on a backyard with big trees, lots of birds, and 4 squirrels. I also like to go to Borders and write, but then I usually have to buy coffee and a muffin, so that gets expensive.
February 20th, 2007 at 9:55 pmlol, Shane, I have gone to write at B&N only to end up spending money on buying more books for my TBR - not a bad thing and buying a sandwich, a latte and cookies - bad thing.
February 21st, 2007 at 9:42 amIsabel… the sun finally shined today… and came in thru the windows… all I could see was rays of dust! so I spent all morning vaccuming and dusting… i think I am now officially spring cleaning. I have to get out to write… unless it’s @ 1 am where I seem to be finding time now…
February 21st, 2007 at 12:06 pmI also write at my desk, which really stinks in a way. I love my laptop because, if weather permitted, I could go outside and listen to the birds. However, since it’s been broke, I’ve been glued to my desk. I’m not letting that get me down, I often open the window above my desk (that is almost the entire length of one wall) and get my nature fix that way.
Sorry I didn’t reply before now Laura, but I’ve been battling high fevers. Thank heavens my temp is keeping a bit normal the last day or so. Although I’m still not feeling my very best. Oh well, can’t let that get me down.
