Warm Welcome And One Busy Nest

Everyone welcome Anne Mallory to the blog. She’s visiting from Jaunty Quills, which I’m guessing she’s hiding from that porcupine they have running lose over there. Shesh, he doesn’t give any clues as to who the new Quill is. Anyhow, Anne has the state for the week…so pay attention, she might let something slip (or not haha).

But first I wanted to show you what some true investigation can do. I took hints from Lady M’s Lady Spies from Jenna Petersen’s From London With Love, and found photos of Jenna’s nest. Then I made her confess and give captions for all the pics. Actually she sent them to me, but the other sounds much more fun.

Anyhow, here is Jenna Petersen’s Nest:

Yes, it’s a closet. My ‘writing closet’ in my office. I’ve got a box of paper, my rolling cubby full of office materials and mailing items. There are some boxes on the floor. The bigger one on the far left has extra author copies of SCANDALOUS and PARLOR GAMES. The smaller one under the Borders bag has DESIRE NEVER DIES bookmarks. On the shelf is my giveaway store. All the books liked up so I can easily grab one if someone wins one or a reviewer needs one. I also have a big box of LONDON in the main room since I’ll be entering some contests soon.

The back wall. My bookshelf filled with research books and keepers. The picture on the wall is a print of a picture of the pagoda in Hyde Park that was part of a celebration of Hanoverian rule (the house of the Prince Regent). It burned down in real life and in one of my books. The office chair is my second office chair, for if my husband or a friend comes in to my office. That’s a foam stand-up of SCANDALOUS on the round table. There are foams of LONDON and PARLOR GAMES, too but they’re laying down. Phone. Phone book. The big box is my author copy box for LONDON (which is getting empty).

My desk. Overflowing trashcan to the left. Color printer/copier on the desk (I only use it for copying). My Dymo label maker. Pictures of my parents and me. An Inuyasha calendar. My shelf of books (my books) with knicknacks. The thing under the desk isn’t a CPU, but a subwoofer. Yeah, baby. I have a subwoofer. Okay, my scribbled up desk pad (I need a new one) with notes and chapter page length for my recently finished erotic romance. The pile of paper beside it? That’s the finished first draft of EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN (the erotic romance. A picture of my husband and I at a wedding behind that. On the wall is a paper with my deadline schedule. A lamp I never use (I should get rid of that). My Happy Bunny flip thing (right now it says, “It’s all about me. Deal with it.” Piles of story notebooks. You can also see my main laser printer disappearing on the right side.

Boring, cluttered, but what can you do?

Well now that she has shared her nest photos with us, I suppose I can let her get back to writing. Besides she has many more books to write for our enjoyment.

LOL, I forgot about sending you these, Haven. Heh. You know, it’s a little bit cleaner now. Er, it WAS a little bit cleaner for about ten seconds. Then the clutter started again. I really am organized otherwise, but that desk… It gets me every time.

Haven, I’m having trouble posting. Apologies if it gets posted twice…

Jenna, I loved this glimpse in your writing life, and the lavendar wall color is delicious.

I was re-reading the description of your desk, when I noticed you wrote about story notebooks.

Do you write your scenes first by longhand? Or are these notebooks where you develop your characters or research your settings?

Ever since I first read here on RI from Elizabeth Boyle about story notebooks, I’ve been curious how many authors use them, and how they use them. Thanks!

Yeah, sorry about this, but it seems Blogger is having troubles lately. I’m not sure why but if your having trouble keep at it, we love hearing from you.

    Keira,

My notebooks are all scene sketches. It’s sort of the bare bones (although sometimes it’s really detailed) about what will happen in each scene. I used to also have a notebook with character info, but now I have that on my computer (to save in case I have related books).

    So I might have:

    Scene 1 - Justin POV
Justin just returned from Continent for wicked months. He’s with Russell and Callum at a rowdy party. Finds out about ‘Ria’ the new Cyprian who everyone wants.

The scene goes on from there (this is actually word for word what is written on scene one of the book I’ll be starting on Monday, THE PROMISE OF PLEASURE). But you can see it’s just details of what needs to come out in the scene. It will often include mood, even dialogue if something I feel like is really great pops into my head.

That’s just me, though. I have no idea if that matches Elizabeth’s description of “story notebooks”.

What a great office, Jenna! And I also love the purple walls. They look to be about the same color as my daughter’s walls in her bedroom. :)

Where are Quinn and Harley? ;) Thanks for sharing pictures of your nest Jenna. What are some of your must have research books?
