Grit, Wit, & “It”

I spent an hour or so pouring over my latest issue of Writer’s Digest last night. So far, I found one particular article of interest I wanted to share. It is called GRIT, WIT, AND “IT” by James Scott Bell.
He reminds us that as writers, it’s our responsibility to draw readers in by giving them the three traits common in all memorable characters. Grit, wit, and “it.”
He describes grit as courage in the face of a great challenge or threat, and how this, in fiction, must always be shown through action. Standing up to a bully, facing one’s greatest fear, etc.
Mr. Bell tells us that wit is something that endears us to people, most especially when it comes naturally, or is self-depreciating. Or when making light of a heavy situation. This is said to make a great first impression on a reader.
Finally, “IT.” This the author of the article describes as the personal magnetism of a character, the elusive “something” that draws the attention of everyone in a room. Sexiness, a certain style or swagger that other characters in your novel react to.
The use of these three traits can add layers and depth to our characters, and make our readers love them.
I highly encourage you to pick up this latest copy of WD and read the entire article, as it elaborates further on the points James Scott Bell brings up in the title. Plus, the issue has a lot of other inspiring pieces as well.
Happy Writing!
That is very interesting.
It’s a good thing when wit comes natural, like with Julia Quinn and Karen Hawkins. It just grabs the reader and keeps their attention, because you never know what they might do next (as in one of J.Q.’s book where the dog knocked the guy in the water).
Grit, I think is more of us gritting our teeth in hopes of being published.
Of course we all hope we have the “IT” quality.
Good post April.
